Some pictures from today's trip to The Wyomissing Hills Park for a Memorial Day parade and service. Below are pictures of Bausman members, scout troop and pack 413, and friends. There were other Bausman members along the parade route, at the service, and in the service. Lizzie Luyben helped to sing the National Anthem and Pastor Mark offered the invocation and blessing. Tomorrow, Bausman continues to remember those who gave their lives for the Nation. Mr. Max Lipman, a combat Vietnam veteran, will speak at the service and we will also remember those who gave their lives in America's conflicts.
One last look at Bausman UCC's morning at The Wyomissing Hills Park this past Sunday. This time it's the Cherub Choir singing "I'm Happy All the Time" under the leadership of Liz Toigo. Good morning Pennsylvania, today is a day to include voting if you can. Part of being a faithful Christian is being a faithful citizen...where we can. Voting IS one of those places. Now using a phrase from the past..."Rock the Vote!" Bausman also thanks those who can vote and those who work the polls to enable the voting to happen!
Yesterday Bausman Memorial UCC went on the road to The Wyomissing Hills Park and Playground for; worship, a meal, and an inter-generational kickball game! We thank the Women's Committee for over-seeing this day, everyone who brought something to share, and everyone for attending the morning. Praise God we had 134 people join in! We also took a moment to recognize our outstanding Sexton, Al Lepera, with gratitude and a gift certificate to Judy's on Cherry. Enjoy the pictures below. We again thank Mary Rebecca Keller for taking the pictures during the day! As always, to learn more about Bausman Memorial UCC check out www.bausmanucc.org today!
This morning, several Bausman members and friends went to The Appalachian Trail. These and other people will take a virtual walk all along the trial. They will walk the miles here in the Wyomissing area and then plot their progress on a map of the Appalachian Trial. Today they "started" this journey by walking on the real Appalachian Trial! See the pictures below for proof! A year or so ago they "walked" across the USA and "stopped" along the trial to "visit" several UCC churches. They contacted each church by mail and learned about the UCC from these interactions. Pat Ori is our leader! If you would like to join in the walk, please make a comment below!
As Claire Young of Ignite: Hope and Health says, "You can change this, the challenge is on." This Sunday would be a great time to do so! Many churches have bats in their bell towers and until recently so did Bausman! A big shout out to Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 413 for their recent contribution of money to secure Bausman's bell tower...before the bats returned for the summer and fall mating season! This is a great example of the troop and pack living out the values that are taught there. We thank God for their generosity! Ehrlich has come in and made the tower "bat proof". They will also be cleaning up any bat guano that might still be around the area. In many states, including Pennsylvania, it is illegal to kill bats in buildings. Exclusion is the only recommended method. Chemicals that can kill bats are also just as hazardous to humans. There are no chemicals licensed for use on bats in the United States. Bats are very beneficial for the environment. They eat bugs, which is not only helpful for keeping mosquitoes and another annoying insects at bay for us humans but also has economic importance. A recent scientific paper on the economic value of bats to agriculture estimated that bats provided nontoxic pest-control services totaling $3.7 billion to $53 billion per year. This study did not even consider what the indirect costs of “replacing” bats with pesticides would be in terms of potential health and pollution threats from greater levels of toxins in the environment. Bats provide other services to humans too, such as pollinating plants and distributing seeds, in tropical and subtropical habitats throughout the world. Some of these plants are useful to people, including a species of agave that is the source of tequila, a multimillion-dollar industry in Mexico. Bat guano has traditionally been used as fertilizer for crops in various parts of the world and is also sold commercially. However, mining of bat guano may also be harmful to cave organisms that depend on it as a source of food, and removal of guano is likely to be disruptive to bats themselves, if they are present."
